The easiest way to get to these remote islands is by charter plane from mainland Fiji, about a 45-minute flight. The 1980’s film “The Blue Lagoon,” with Brooke Shields, was filmed in the downright breathtaking Turtle Bay, where you can now visit the iconic caves and pristine blue waters that once lit up the silver screen. Up until the late 1980’s, land-based tourism was restricted, but thanks to the Fijian government's ecotourism initiatives, a handful of eco-resorts and accommodations have since sprouted up along this island chain, including the luxurious Yasawa Island Resort & Spa. To get there, take the 20-minute ferry ride from the main port in Downtown Dakar to the island. Il de Goreé is a slight departure from your typical island, but it's an amazing jaunt for travelers who like their sand with a side of history. With its dark past behind, the island is now a quaint getaway where you will find locals and foreigners alike frolicking in the blue waters, set to a serene backdrop of trees and pastel-colored buildings.
